CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE DAY

We know how important it is that children learn about, celebrate and take pride in their culture. Last week, to help celebrate Guatemalan Independence Day, students and staff at the Acorn Childcare Center held a colorful celebration of Guatemalan culture.

Students decorated the classrooms with national symbols including el quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird, and monja blanca, Guatemala’s national flower. They wore trajes típico (traditional costumes), danced to the music of the Marimba and marched in their own parade through the hallways, much like the big parades held in the streets on Independence Day, with family clapping and singing along.

Holiday rituals connect the ordinary with the extraordinary and give young students a sense of purpose and belonging. Celebrating together builds strong bonds in families and in communities. In addition, happy memories in childhood in turn lead to more positive interactions when children become parents themselves. Your continued support makes moments like this possible for our students. Thank you!

EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS

Every donation helps ensure that we can continue transforming the lives of families facing extreme poverty.

When you make your donation recurring, you’ll join our Helping Hands Sustainer Circle, a community of extraordinary humans working together to provide monthly support for the children and families at the Acorn Childcare Center. As a member, your monthly commitment provides a reliable and sustainable source of funds we can use to plan programs, create budgets and expand services. For example, your monthly commitment of $25 could provide the children with safe drinking water each month while $50 could provide books and art supplies for the month.

Maya Childcare Inc is run entirely by volunteers, thus 100% of your donation goes directly to the Acorn Childcare Center.
